Ahh! He's doing it again!

Pissing me off, that is.

Another reason to hate Gary Humphries:

ABC supporters reject ads-for-drama idea

The Friends of the ABC says funding for drama production at the public broadcaster should come from the Federal Government, not advertising.

A member of the Government's communications committee, Gary Humphries, says he will formally raise with the Communications Minister the possibility of allowing advertising on the ABC.

Senator Humphries says advertising revenue should supplement government funding to pay for more drama production.

But Friends of the ABC spokeswoman Margaret O'Connor says that is not the answer.

"The Friends believes that amending the ABC Act to allow advertising of non-ABC products would damage the public confidence enjoyed by the ABC," she said.

"And it might risk editorial integrity or influence program-making decisions.

"All the ABC needs is a restoration of base funding which has been depleted severely over the last 20 years under both Labor and Liberal governments."

Comments:
Trust British Humphries, sure can.

Look, it's what, 9c a day? Boost the funding and leave them alone f_cking coalition arseholes.

They've got squillions to push their right wing agenda (our money), but not enough to give Mr Squiggle a nose job?

Bastards.

I bet Sarah doesn't know about Mr Squiggle either.

I'm not that backward! We did have a TV until I was 2 years old. I'm pretty sure I was either only allowed to watch ABC or the tv was only tuned to ABC, and I remember watching Mr Squiggle, Sesame Street and Playschool (but I thought that was for babies...). I also remember watching Dr Who with my dad at the very late time of, maybe, 6pm, and being terrified by the Daleks :P

Anyway, the government would love nothing more than to allow advertising on the ABC, which would then provide it with more excuses not to increase funding in the future. They'd love to see the demise of a channel that actually engages in genuine journalism and current affairs programming instead of giving them the type of blowjob that the commercial channels are renowned for.

Somehow I get the feeling Gary Humphries isn't saying all this because he is a passionate supporter of Australian drama...

The other thing is that the government may think that advertising on the ABC will by necessity drag it back from the imaginary left to the "middle" (aka the right). To win advertising dollars you have to rate, which means programming for the lowest common denominator instead of some of the quality political/news shows and things that I am sure irk the government to no end.

I agree. Dr Who scared me too. Actually so did Mr Squiggle.

And as for Cass, she is of course 100% right. The ABC is not a socialist organisation doing leftie things for the sake of it. They are qualified journalists doing their job and, because they don't have commercial pressures, they do a very good job. And considering much of their journalism is about big business and poor government, well, no pictures need to be drawn here.
